Research

Since its foundation in 1996, the cardiac MRI unit of the Franz-Volhard-Klinik has taken an international pioneer role in the application of MRI for the assessment of myocardial injury. Research is focussed on the diagnosis of myocarditis, on the characterization of primary and secondary cardiomyopathies, and on early detection of myocardial infarction. Several new approaches towards qualitative and quantitative characterization of inflammatory and non-inflammatory forms of myocardial injury were developed, which in the meantime have found their way into international guidelines on standard MRI protocols. Apart from self-directed studies that benefit from direct access to the cardiology department of a modern 1000-bed hospital (HELIOS-Klinikum Berlin-Buch), the cardiac MRI unit on a regular basis takes part in multi-centre studies and cooperates on projects with partners from industry (e.g. Siemens Medical Solutions) and from neighbouring research institutes (such as the Max-Delbrück-Center). International co-operations are also based on individual research fellowships of members of the group at different host institutions.
A major step of extension towards experimental MR research was made by the group’s participation in the foundation of the currently developing Berlin Ultra-high-field Facility (BUFFY). This new research centre, which is currently under construction within walking distance of the Franz-Volhard-Klinik at the site of the Max-Delbrück-Center, will host both a 7 T human and a 9.4 T animal MR system.
